Seven options, seven different jobs
“Best” depends on what is causing the discomfort, your health history, and what you can keep doing. Use this as a starting point for a conversation with a clinician, not a diagnosis.
| Option | Where it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Strength and movement | A foundation for function and confidence during daily activity. | Progress takes consistency and a plan that suits your starting point. |
| Physiotherapy or assessment | Useful when the source is unclear or you want a tailored progression. | Access, cost and time can vary. |
| Topical anti-inflammatory medicine | A short-term symptom option for some adults with knee osteoarthritis. | Check contraindications and suitability with a pharmacist or clinician. |
| Weight change, if relevant | May reduce load for people who want and are advised to pursue it. | It is personal, gradual and not the answer for every knee. |
| Brace, tape or footwear | A time-limited trial for a specific stability or activity need. | Fit and individual response matter. |
| Collagen supplement | An optional nutrition choice for someone who has checked form, amount and expectations. | Research varies by preparation. It is not an instant pain reliever or medical treatment. |
| Injection or surgery | A clinician-led decision for a specific diagnosis and situation. | Benefit, risks and recovery depend on the procedure and the person. |
If you choose collagen, compare the actual serving
Collagen peptides and undenatured Type II collagen are different forms. The dose printed beside each matters. A product’s total scoop weight doesn’t tell you how much of every ingredient it contains.
The live supplement facts show 4,500 mg multi-collagen blend and 20 mg undenatured Type II at 5 g, or 9,000 mg blend and 40 mg Type II at 10 g. The pouch contains 26 one-scoop servings or 13 two-scoop servings. Separate amounts by collagen source are not listed.

When a knee needs medical attention
Get prompt advice after a major injury, if you can’t bear weight, or if the knee is hot, very swollen, deformed, locked or giving way. Fever with joint symptoms needs urgent assessment. Ongoing or worsening symptoms are worth discussing with a qualified clinician.
For osteoarthritis, NICE guidance recommends therapeutic exercise tailored to the person. A clinician can help decide whether medication or other options are suitable for your circumstances.
