Collagen and vitamin C: do you need both?
Vitamin C is needed for collagen biosynthesis. That makes it a useful nutrient to understand. It doesn’t mean everyone who takes collagen also needs a vitamin C supplement.

Prefer a combined formula?
Our label puts vitamin C alongside the multi-collagen blend and undenatured Type II.
Why vitamin C appears beside collagen
Vitamin C is required for the body’s biosynthesis of collagen. That is why it appears in many formulas that also include collagen ingredients. The nutrient’s role is real; the leap from that fact to “everyone taking collagen needs a vitamin C pill” is not.
Vitamin C also comes from food. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements lists fruits and vegetables as common sources, including citrus fruit, peppers, kiwi, broccoli and tomatoes. A supplement is one way to add vitamin C, but it isn’t the only way to get it.
Timing claims also deserve a close read. The basic role of vitamin C in collagen biosynthesis does not, by itself, prove that a person must consume vitamin C in the same scoop or at the same moment as a collagen supplement.
Decide from your whole intake
Look at what you already eat and any other supplements you take. The amount you need depends on age, sex, life stage and individual circumstances. The NIH fact sheet gives recommended amounts and food sources, and a clinician can advise on a personal concern or known deficiency.
For many shoppers, the choice is about convenience. If you already get enough vitamin C, you may prefer a collagen product without another vitamin. If you want a combined formula, check that the amount is clearly listed and fits your routine.
Read the serving size before comparing amounts. A product might display an amount per scoop while its directions define a serving as two scoops. Compare like with like.
Vitamin C amounts on our label
More Than Collagen pairs its multi-collagen blend with vitamin C. The facts panel gives two serving columns, so the amount changes with the serving size.
The same panel lists vitamin D3, vitamin K2 and a proprietary blend. Check the package for the full ingredient list, serving directions and allergen information.
