Collagen is a family of structural proteins in connective tissues. In supplements, it is usually processed into peptides or supplied in another specific form. The word alone does not tell you the source, dose or evidence.
What is collagen in the body?
Collagen is a protein that helps provide structure in tissues such as skin, bone, tendons and cartilage. There are multiple collagen types, with different structures and distributions. The body makes collagen as part of normal tissue maintenance; food and supplements are not the only factors involved.
What are collagen peptides?
Collagen peptides are fragments produced when collagen is broken down, commonly through hydrolysis. They are small enough to dissolve in many drink mixes. “Peptides” describes a form of the ingredient, while Type I, II and III describe collagen types. Those terms answer different questions.
Does taking collagen send it straight to a joint?
No. Digestion breaks dietary proteins into amino acids and smaller peptides. A supplement does not travel intact from the scoop to a chosen body part. Clinical studies instead test a defined ingredient, amount, population and outcome to see whether a measurable difference occurs.
What does the evidence say?
A 2024 meta-analysis of collagen-derivative trials in osteoarthritis reported small-to-moderate average effects on pain and function across the included studies. A separate 2025 trial of one combination product did not find a significant advantage over placebo after 12 weeks. Neither result proves what every collagen product will do, and neither study tested Balmve’s finished formula.
How should I read a collagen label?
Look for the collagen form, source, amount per serving, serving size and number of servings. Check whether the amount belongs to one ingredient or a blend. A broad phrase such as “multi collagen” is not a substitute for the supplement facts panel. Balmve’s current label and full formula are on the product page.
