Peptides: the hydrolysed route
Collagen peptides are smaller fragments produced by hydrolysis. A 2008 study looked at collagen hydrolysate in athletes reporting activity-related joint pain. It reported possible benefits in that population, but only 97 of 147 randomized participants were included in the statistical evaluation. That does not establish an effect for every peptide product or for diagnosed osteoarthritis.
Undenatured Type II: a different preparation
A 2013 placebo-controlled study gave 40 mg/day of a specific UC-II ingredient to 55 healthy volunteers who experienced knee discomfort during activity. After 120 days, the study reported changes in knee extension and time before discomfort during a stepmill test. Small, specific trial; specific ingredient.
What a direct comparison can and cannot answer
A 2022 trial compared native Type II collagen with glucosamine plus chondroitin and placebo in people with knee osteoarthritis. One author disclosed an affiliation with the maker of the tested native Type II ingredient. A separate 2025 trial tested a combination of hydrolysed collagen and UC-II against placebo; it found no significant between-group difference over 12 weeks. None of these trials establishes that one ingredient form is best for everyone.
How to choose
Start from the question you want answered. Compare exact form, amount, duration and population in the evidence. Balmve’s formula includes both a peptide blend and separately listed undenatured Type II. That is a description of the formula, not proof that the combination outperforms either ingredient alone.
